Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn grow up and get larcenous in the Band Of Robbers trailer
We’re starting to see the effects of a new generation of filmmakers raised on the movies of Wes Anderson. Exhibit A? Band Of Robbers, the upcoming film from brothers Adam and Aaron Nee, which, judging from this trailer, looks like it has drunk deeply from the well of Anderson’s oeuvre. The film also takes advantage of public domain law by re-envisioning Mark Twain’s famous creations, Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, only reborn in the late 20th century and grown up into petty criminals. There’s a distinct air of Bottle Rocket to these proceedings, but with a slightly darker, more cracked sensibility.
Band Of Robbers features the acting talents of Criminal Minds’ Matthew Gray Gubler, Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist, Hannibal Buress, and Kyle Gallner, who you know from about a thousand different things but will forever be known to us as “Beaver” from Veronica Mars. This could either be super awesome or impossibly twee, which means the Nee brothers really have been studying Anderson’s filmography.
