Tom Waits gets key to El Paso
Oh, El Paso. Home to defunct post-punk band At The Drive-In and title of Marty Robbins' greatest hit, El Paso also is a place where Tom Waits can go anywhere he pleases. The Texas city gave the singer-songwriter a key to the city during a show on Wednesday. Apparently Waits was ambushed by the honor, as a uniformed officer walked on stage with local councilwoman Susie Boyd while he was performing. "I paid all those tickets," Waits quipped when he saw the officer, adding: "She was dead when I got there." When Boyd handed Waits a plaque, he was "visibly moved," according to the NME. "This is a first for me," he said "a real first."
