Note to carmakers: Imitating the dulcet, highly commercial music of Tom Waits will get you nothing but trouble. The gravel-voiced cult favorite settled a lawsuit against General Motors and advertising agency McCann Erickson concerning a Waitsian copycat heard in car commercials that aired in Scandinavia in 2005. Waits plans to give his settlement cash to charity. "I'm glad to be out of the car business once and for all," Waits said in a rasp-free statement.
