Tonight… on Arrested Development

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Tuesday, May 29. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

Arrested Development (Netflix): The first half of season five of Arrested Development has dropped, resulting in the first new episodes of the show since 2013. Netflix explains where the Bluths and their stair car are now: They’re “finally getting the award they think they deserve—for family of the year. A development which will help Lindsay as she begins her campaign for Congress, to become ‘part of the problem’. But whatever happens, Michael will always come back to save the family. Probably.”

Kyle Ryan says the episodes show the Bluths back in a familiar groove: “Tangled is a good place for Arrested Development to be. That may not seem like the case after season four, whose numerous plots were made additionally confusing by the non-chronological episode order, but season five feels more cohesive, like the Bluths are all mixed up with each other, not on their own tangents.” Best of all, Kyle reports, “season five is funny, and gets funnier as it proceeds.”

Regular coverage

Legion (FX, 10 p.m.)

Wild card

The Big Family Cooking Showdown (Netflix): If you’d prefer a more reality-based, good-natured family feud that offers some ideas for your own dinners, check out The Big Family Cooking Showdown, now on Netflix. The show has the polite benevolence of most BBC-based cooking shows, but the family members do offer the occasional sniping and commentary among each other for some necessary drama. It all makes for a fun binge-watch that will have you pondering whether it’s time to finally start crafting your own pasta.
