Tonight, you will be visited by Great News’ abundant holiday spirits
Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Thursday, December 21. All times Eastern.
Top pick
Great News (NBC, 8 p.m.): We are here to warn you, Scrooges of Peak TV, that you have yet a chance and hope of escaping the fate of the many wretched souls who’ve overlooked one of your What’s On Tonight correspondent’s favorite new comedies of 2017. Tonight, you will be haunted by two new Great News episodes, one of which inverts a classic sitcom plot and provides the inspiration for the tortured prose you see before you: Carol Wendelson’s Christmas cheer is simply too much for her colleagues at The Breakdown, and some familiar-looking ghosts urge her to see the error of her ways—just as this ghost of TV present urges you to repent by sticking around for a second helping of Great News, after which Vikram Murthi will fetch you the prize recap from the Recapperers’ around the corner. Not the little prize recap—the big one.
Wild card
Peaky Blinders (Netflix): And the Scrooges were better than their word, and they became as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a person as the good old TV box knew—or any screen in the good old world. Some people laughed to see the alteration, but they let them laugh, and little heeded them, for the Scrooges were wise enough to know that they now had a fourth season of Peaky Blinders with which to drown that laughter in a fresh round of Shelby family mayhem. And so, as Tommy Shelby observed: “You put a bullet in that fucker’s brains, by order of the Peaky Blinders.”
