Tony Shalhoub to play another socially awkward genius on TV

After Monk ended its eight-season run, Tony Shalhoub didn’t stray too far from TV work. The BrainDead actor has had regular and recurring roles in network and cable comedies like CBS’ We Are Men and Showtime’s Nurse Jackie. But the former Wings man will soon revisit the awkwardness of Adrian Monk with a role in alliterative Amazon pilot, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

The 1950s-set drama was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, and will star House Of CardsRachel Brosnahan as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a married woman who realizes her meticulous plans for life don’t much allow for living. She leaves her swanky Manhattan world (we don’t know if that includes her husband) for the bohemian environs of standup comedy in Village. And according to Deadline, Shalhoub will play her father Abe Weissman, “an academic and intellectual” who sounds just as rigid as the San Francisco detective he once played. Abe “believes in books and facts and speaking as little as possible,” the latter of which must feel like a real loss on a show from Sherman-Palladino, who wrote the pilot.

There’s currently no word on when The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will begin filming, but it’s bound to show up in one of Amazon’s future pilot seasons.
