Your time machine isn’t broken: It’s April 2015 and classic rock titans Toto and Kansas are celebrating their triumphant return to the worldwide album charts. The latter heartland rockers win the battle of the U.S. Billboard Top 200 thanks to the No. 61 debut of Miracles Out Of Nowhere, a combined CD/DVD documentary about the band’s history. Besides more airings of “Carry On My Wayward Son” and “Dust In The Wind” than your average Midwest classic rock station, Miracles Out Of Nowhere ensures “viewers will hear the band tell stories about recording in the studio next to John Lennon, a backstage fight with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, and how the words ‘free beer’ changed their lives forever.” In the meantime, don’t miss this incredible “Wayward” performance making the rounds, which should fill your yearly quota of sweaty musician guys wearing short-shorts and tube socks.
Meanwhile, Toto’s new album, Toto XIV, checked in at No. 98 on the Billboard Top 200—a full eight spots below Journey’s 1988 Greatest Hits collection, if you’re scoring along at home—but in the Top 10 in nine other countries. Despite titles to the contrary, it’s the band’s thirteenth studio album, even if keyboardist Steve Porcaro feels the LP much more resembles a less complicated Roman numeral. “This is opposite of going through the motions,” he said in a press release. “We are treating this like it is Toto V, our follow-up to TOTO IV. We just want to be the best version of ourselves that we can be.”
