Triumph The Insult Comic Dog to poop on Jack McBrayer for Adult Swim
Adult Swim programming continues to attract more young-adult viewers than many offerings from NBC, CBS, Fox, ABC, or The CW, a curious indication that viewers under 35 love watching shows made specifically for viewers under 35. So there’s no better time than now, with network upfronts on the horizon, for Adult Swim to declare its intention to keep pooping on its broadcast competitors—or it can just bring on Triumph The Insult Comic Dog to do that. Robert Smigel’s foul-mouthed, cigar-chomping canine puppet will return to TV alongside Jack McBrayer in a yet-untitled Adult Swim series in which the mismatched pair plays the former stars of a Lassie-esque series. Reuniting the characters after 15 years apart, the show looks to be a welcome return to the days of McBrayer fielding abuse of a scene partner with an NBC pedigree, as well as an opportunity to re-imagine classic Odd Couple exchanges as scatological Triumph punchlines. “It’s not spaghetti, it’s linguine,” McBrayer would say, before Triumph nudges a plate of pasta onto the floor. “Now it’s garbage,” Triumph retorts. “For me to poop on.”
News of the McBrayer-Triumph series accompanied the formal announcement of other new series in development at Adult Swim, including John Krasinski’s Dream Corp LLC, and Jon Glaser’s self-descriptive Neon Joe, Werewolf Hunter. (He hunts werewolves and wears a bunch of neon!) In non-Jo(h)n pilot orders, there’s also a project from WorldStarHipHop.com, which expands the site’s purview from capturing stupid shit in the real world to synthesizing stupid shit into a single-camera sitcom. It’s the kind of thing that Aaron McGruder used to turn into episodes and panels of The Boondocks—instead, McGruder’s busy channeling that POV into Black Jesus, which now has a loose premiere date (“This Summer and Fall”) and a logline (“The series finds Jesus living in present day Compton, CA on a daily mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers”). Black Jesus joins the Adult Swim lineup with another misbehaving dog (Mr. Pickles), an anthology series from Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim (Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories), and an hour-long space adventure for The Venture Bros.
And at last the news brief came to Mike Tyson Mysteries. It’s a return to Adult Swim’s “messing with the Hanna-Barbera catalogue” roots, in which the titular boxer and reformed videogame boss forms a private-investigation firm out of spare parts from Scooby-Doo, The Funky Phantom, The Amazing Chan And The Chan Clan, and a huge moral gray area. (Also, there’s a pigeon voiced by noted Saturday-morning aficionado Jim Rash.) If the Mike Tyson Mystery Team’s first case is “Who pooped on this?”, The A.V. Club already knows who the prime suspect is. (It was Red Herring, duh.)
Do you need to see all of our upfronts coverage in one place? Well, you can right here. And stay tuned throughout the day, because the most difficult news is usually saved for last, and NBC, most notably, still has some scheduling decisions to hand down…
For you to poop on.
