True Blood gets a new showrunner in a peaceful transfer of power

The Hollywood Reporter has the news that HBO has promoted Mark Hudis, who has served as co-executive producer on True Blood for two seasons, to the position of showrunner for the series’ sixth season. (Season five premieres June 10.) Hudis, who has previously worked on Nurse Jackie, That ’70s Show, and the short-lived Judy Greer comedy Miss Guided, will be replacing True Blood creator Alan Ball, but unlike the Dan Harmon-Community trainwreck, the situation is amicable between all parties. Ball had already announced that he would be stepping back from the series at the end of the forthcoming season so he can focus on other projects, such as Wichita, his abortion-provider drama in development at HBO. At the time of that announcement, Ball suggested that he thought True Blood might be getting a little “tired,” or maybe just that he was getting tired of it, but HBO’s eagerness to settle who’ll be in charge of its sixth season before its fifth season has seen the light of day indicates that the network thinks it still has fresh veins to tap dry.
