Not yet satiated by onscreen violence, True Blood’s Rutina Wesley has joined the cast of Hannibal’s presumably grisly third season. TV Line reports that Wesley will play Reba McClane, a woman who takes a romantic interest in Francis Dolarhyde (Richard Armitage) and is blind to the fact that he’s actually a serial killer known as the Tooth Fairy. In fact, she’s blind to everything.
The character of Reba is central to the plot of Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon novel, and she’s been portrayed previously by Joan Allen in Michael Mann’s Manhunter and Emily Watson in Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon. Wesley joins Nina Arianda—recently cast as Will Graham’s wife, Molly—and Gillian Anderson (whose Bedelia du Maurier has been upped to a series regular) in bolstering the show’s rank of strong female characters trying not to die at the hands of male psychopaths.
