True Detective writer Nick Pizzolatto’s novel will get a film adaptation
The success of True Detective—which had HBO’s most-watched debut in three years—has all but guaranteed a second season of the crime anthology series. Now Deadline reports that the first novel by series creator Nic Pizzolatto, Galveston, will be adapted into a film from August: Osage County producer Jean Doumanian and Danish documentary filmmaker Janus Metz (Armadillo), helming his first narrative feature. Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts will star as Roy “Big Country” Cady, who's diagnosed with a terminal illness on the same day his loan-shark boss tries to kill him, setting in motion a hastily planned escape to Galveston, Texas. It doesn’t quite have the pedigree of True Detective, where the acting talents of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson and Cary Fukunaga’s arresting direction have at times outshone the writing. But if a second season of True Detective is really forthcoming, then any project associated with Pizzolatto will surely get a boost in recognition.
