Tupac gets mashed up with James Brown for the Django Unchained soundtrack
It doesn’t look like Tupac Shakur is ever going to get to rest in peace. Not only has the rapper’s image been used repeatedly in an unholy (and seemingly terminated) resurrection by hologram, his music has been manipulated to create countless posthumous “collaborations” with artists from Snoop Dogg to Dr. Dre to Eminem to The Notorious B.I.G. If the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming bloody slave-revenge film Django Unchained is any indication, he's not going away any time soon.
“Unchained (The Payback/Untouchable),” the theme song for Django Unchained, features a mashup of Shakur and fellow dead musical icon James Brown. Produced by Claudio Cueni, a former engineer of Shakur’s and the mastermind behind the vocals of the Tupac hologram, “Unchained” does fit into Tarantino’s dual habits of eclectic song choices and discomfiting cultural mashups. Listen below and judge whether “Unchained” is another triumphant, iconic track for a Tarantino film or yet another unnecessary revival of and blemish on Tupac’s legacy. [via Hot New Hip Hop]
