Tupac Shakur biopic on the way, director looking for an unknown to play him
Training Day director Antoine Fuqua has announced that his next project will be a biopic on the life of late rapper Tupac Shakur, and that he plans to “go to the streets” to find a complete unknown to play him. It’s a similar tactic that producers took with last year’s Biggie Smalls biopic, Notorious, which launched a nationwide search before settling on Brooklyn rapper Jamal “Gravy” Woolard. Over the years, of course, several actors have portrayed Tupac, including The Hurt Locker’s Anthony Mackie—in both Notorious and the off-Broadway play Up Against The Wind—and Lamont Bentley in 2001’s Too Legit: The MC Hammer Story, but Fuqua says he’s intent on finding a new face “anywhere he might be in the world,” but, you know, probably not in Scotland. Tupac himself is already hard at work on the soundtrack.
