TV Club Classic doesn't wanna wait for your lives to be over before you see us cover Dawson's Creek
Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Tuesday, June 5. All times are Eastern.
TOP PICK
Dawson’s Creek (11 a.m.): Were there better teen dramas? Absolutely. Were there better shows on The WB? Oh, definitely (and we’ve covered two of them). But was there another show with more instances of James Van Der Beek over-emoting? No, there was not. Go back to when it all began, to when Katie Holmes was America’s sweetheart, and nobody ever would have pegged Michelle Williams to be the Oscar nominee, and Joshua Jackson was still the cool one, and James Van Der Beek would never feel the need to make fun of himself. Brandon Nowalk doesn’t wanna wait, guys. For your lives to be over. (Okay, if you don’t read these articles, we won’t ever cover anything you actually like. So there.)
REGULAR COVERAGE
MasterChef (Fox, 8 p.m.): Fox’s summer strategy of overloading on Gordon Ramsay continues apace, as the British loudmouth makes his way through another hour of Hell’s Kitchen at 8, then dips in for the second episode of this TV Club-approved series at 9. Phil Dyess-Nugent can’t take any more yelling!
Workaholics (Comedy Central, 10:30 p.m.): You made quite clear to us that you would be more than happy to read weekly Workaholics coverage, so here you go. Here’s a place to talk about everything you did and didn’t like about the episode with Kyle Ryan. See what happens when you ask for things nicely?
TV CLUB CLASSIC
Six Feet Under (1 p.m.): Our own John Teti is at E3 this week, but he was nice enough to file a Six Feet Under review early, so we could keep the ol’ Summer TV Club Classic machine rolling on productively. We hope he brings back news that someone is developing a Six Feet Under RPG. We’d like that a lot.
Police Squad! (3 p.m.): Erik Adams didn’t know that Police Squad! was “in color,” even though the announcer said so, because the prior time he watched it was when he was waiting out the long Antarctic winter aboard a steamship that ran aground on the seventh continent. And the TV was black-and-white!
WHAT ELSE IS ON
Pretty Little Liars/Jane By Design (ABC Family, 8 p.m.): It’s a big night for the cable networks, as a huge number of series are debuting their summer seasons tonight. If you’re so inclined, you can check out the start of a new mystery on Pretty Little Liars, then that weird show about a teen girl working in fashion.
Rizzoli & Isles/Franklin & Bash (TNT, 9 p.m.): You can also escape TNT’s incessant promotion of these two series during its NBA playoffs broadcasts as they launch tonight. First, the titular Ms. Rizzoli and Ms. Isles solve crimes, then Kevin McFarland watches Mssrs. Franklin and Bash save the day in court.
The Glee Project (Oxygen, 10 p.m.): Some people—among them Myles McNutt—told us that this show was a fun summer diversion last summer. While we have our doubts, given how much everybody cast from the show sucked on the actual series, we’re sending Myles back in to see what’s up this year.
Storage Wars (A&E, 10 p.m.): This show is also back. We got a real jones for this one back when A&E seemed to be running marathons of it thrice-weekly, but at some point, we realized it was all just the same thing over and over and broke the program’s deadly thrall. Will you be so lucky? Tune in; find out!
Sophie’s Choice (Showtime 2, 8 p.m.): Alan J. Pakula directed Meryl Streep to her first Best Actress Oscar—the one nobody gets upset about her winning—in this tale of a woman trying to move on with her life after the horrors of the Holocaust. Everybody remembers that scene, but did you know Kevin Kline also stars?
Mr. Popper’s Penguins (HBO, 8 p.m.): Before Game Of Thrones, HBO ran a, “Don’t unsubscribe! Look at all this other stuff we air!” montages that showed off all of its exclusive content, and one film featured was this one, which only exists as footage of Jim Carrey teaching penguins to dance, we’re pretty sure.
NBA Eastern Conference Finals: Game 5: Celtics at Heat (ESPN, 7:30 p.m.): The Thunder have gone up over the Spurs, so now it’s the Celtics and Heat’s turn to see who will get an edge heading into the final games of the conference finals. If you haven’t been watching, tune in. You’re missing exciting basketball.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Teen Wolf (Monday): A bunch of you have been asking us for regular Teen Wolf coverage, so Phil Dyess-Nugent covered the season’s first episode on Sunday, then the second on Monday. If you really do like this show—and we’re not so sure you do ourselves—then this is the time to let us know to keep going.
