TV Club Classic's coverage of Freaks And Geeks doesn't give a damn about your bad reputation
Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Wednesday, May 29. All times are Eastern.
TOP PICK
Freaks And Geeks (1 p.m.): Ever since TV Club Classic was just a twinkle in the eye of our great TV Club pioneers and forefathers, there was hope that someday, we would come to the mountains of Paul Feig and Judd Apatow’s terrific look back at tortured adolescence, Freaks And Geeks. And now, here we are! And it all looks so beautiful! Todd VanDerWerff will take you through all of the series’ episodes, one per week, through the rest of the summer and early fall. In the meantime, he would like you all to sort yourselves into groups of “freaks” and “geeks.” He is a jock, and he’s going to pick on you nerds.
REGULAR COVERAGE
Arrested Development (Netflix, 11 a.m.): We’ve never met a Netflix program we couldn’t pretend was being doled out a few episodes every week, and the fourth season of Arrested Development is no different! Erik Adams and Noel Murray are prepared to pretend this show will run well into July.
Don’t Trust The B—— In Apt. 23 (Hulu, 5 p.m.): Here’s another show we can pretend will be running well into the month of June, even though it will be removed from Hulu in the next couple of days. If you haven’t seen it yet, Emily Guendelsberger hopes that you’ll catch up with the remaining episodes soon.
MasterChef (Fox, 8 p.m.): Will we be covering this? Won’t we be covering this? Even we don’t know. What we do know is that Phil Dyess-Nugent is at the ready to let all of these contestants know they have absolutely no technique. Along the way, he’ll show you some nifty methods for mincing garlic.
Psych (USA, 10 p.m.): This series is apparently doing a musical spectacular that was supposed to air this season, but it’s been pushed back to the fall, because that’s when people are most open to musical spectaculars. Instead, Kevin McFarland hopes this season finale is gladiator themed. He loves gladiators!
TV CLUB CLASSIC
Sports Night (3 p.m.): Donna Bowman left the CSC gang last summer, wondering what kind of day it had been. She was heartened to see Isaac again, and it was nice that Dana and Casey might start dating, but she also wasn’t sure what would happen next. She’s glad it’s time for season two, so stick around.
WHAT ELSE IS ON
American Baking Competition (CBS, 8 p.m.): Phil Dyess-Nugent’s unique ability to cover shows about things that would normally seem completely boring to watch on TV reaches its breaking point as he checks out CBS’ new series about finding America’s best baker. Put it in the pantry with your cupcakes!
Lego Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles (Cartoon Network, 8 p.m.): See, it’s sort of like a story about the Star Wars characters, but they’re all Legos! Oliver Sava has been hoping for a Lego version of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation saga for years now, but he supposes this Yoda tale will just have to do.
Melissa & Joey (ABC Family, 8 p.m.): Kevin McFarland told us that he just wanted to write about how weird it was that this show exists, and who were we to say no to that? What he didn’t tell us was that he was the biggest backer of Melissa Joan Hart’s ill-fated Kickstarter venture. It’s okay, Kevin! Let it all out.
Love Thy Neighbor (OWN, 9 p.m.): Oprah Winfrey’s network continues receiving the shot in the arm that is lots and lots of new Tyler Perry-related content with this new sitcom to go along with last night’s new drama, The Haves And Have Nots. Sonia Saraiya has watched both and lets you know what’s what.
What About Bob? (CMT, 8 p.m.): CMT is running this Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss vehicle (directed by Frank Oz!) in a 148-minute timeslot, which means it will likely be running the film uncut with limited commercial interruption, which is exactly the kind of treatment this all-time classic truly deserves.
Magic Mike (HBO, 9 p.m.): We’re not afraid to say it: We think this movie was one of the best of last year, and Matthew McConaughey was sadly snubbed for an Oscar nomination for just being the whacked-out force of nature that he is. If you haven’t seen it, check it out! It’s surprisingly awesome.
Stanley Cup Playoffs: Game 7: Red Wings at Blackhawks (NBC Sports, 8 p.m.): This series has been absolutely terrific, and it’s all come down to a game seven that should prove exciting. Of course, we don’t actually know if NBC Sports will air this, since TV Guide says it won’t, but we sure hope it does.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Brooklyn DA (Tuesday): Kevin McFarland drops in on the life of a Brooklyn DA in the new CBS docu-series of the same name. We’re guessing that he spends most of his time listening to cool bands and trying out awesome new organic food cooperatives. That’s what it takes to be the Brooklyn DA!
