TV Land can be hip, you’ll see! You’ll all see!
Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Wednesday, July 15. All times are Eastern.
Top pick (There Are Shows On TV Land edition)
The Jim Gaffigan Show (TV Land, 10 p.m.): Sometimes, life throws you twists. One minute, you’re hanging out with all your VH1 talking head friends (not to be confused with your Talking Heads friends). The next, you have to juggle work and family on TV Land. You have help from people like Ashley Williams and Michael Ian Black and Adam Goldberg, but how did you get there? Kyle Ryan interviewed Jim Gaffigan to figure that all out, and it was definitely been a long road in Gaffigan’s case. Was it a road to nowhere? Well according to Gwen Ihnat’s pre-air review, it was quite the opposite.
Impastor (TV Land, 10:30 p.m.): Ooh, what is Impastor? It sounds delicious! “Buddy Dobbs (Michael Rosenbaum), a slacker on the run from a loan shark, steals a man’s identity and ends up posing as a small town’s new gay pastor.” That is… Oh. Will Impastor be the right show for Michael Rosenbaum to erase Lex Luthor from people’s minds? Or will it just make certain What’s On Tonight contributors hungry for tacos for 30 minutes? (Spoiler alert: It can go either way, but it will probably go the second way.) Dennis Perkins isn’t biting though—check out his pre-air review of the show.
The Exes (TV Land, 11 p.m.): The Exes is also on tonight.
Also noted
Steven Universe (Cartoon Network, 6 p.m.): This is the true top pick, and it’s also a reason for Eric Thurm to never stop crying.
Regular coverage
WWE NXT (WWE Network, 8 p.m.)
Deutschland 83 (Sundance, 11 p.m.)
Mr. Robot (USA, 10 p.m.)
Key & Peele (Comedy Central, 10 p.m.)
Elsewhere in TV Club
Expert Witness, meet MasterChef. This time around, Randall Colburn speaks with Elise Mayfield about being a contestant on the show, and while it’s not the same as speaking with the person who names the MasterChef episodes, it’s pretty good.
Celebrities—they’re just like people. However, when they’re extras in a movie or a show, it’s called a “cameo.” Some cameos are better than others though, and that’s where this latest Inventory comes from.
What else is on?
2015 ESPY Awards (ABC, 8 p.m.): Joel McHale is hosting. You know whether or not you’re a person who watches the ESPYS. Why do you need our help figuring that one out? In the immortal words of Dr. Lola Spratt, figure out your life!
Melissa & Joey (ABC Family, 8 p.m.): “Mel pretends to love her birthday gift from Joe. But that turns out to be a fake gift to throw her off. Instead, he had a one-of-a-kind wedding ring made for her that she hates even more and is horrified she has to wear the rest of her life.” We hope Melissa & Joey (which are not the characters’ names) ends with Mel and Joe Thelma and Louise-ing themselves. It’s the healthiest route for their relationship to take at this point.
MasterChef (Fox, 8 p.m): In “Rice Rice Baby,” we give MasterChef a week to really think about its choices in episode titles.
Unsung (TV One, 8 p.m.): It took nine seasons (and this is the finale), but Unsung is finally putting the spotlight on Kid ‘n Play. We’re sure we’ve included this video in a What’s On Tonight before, but now it’s really applicable:
Bullseye (Fox, 9 p.m): It’s Bullseye’s first season finale, and Colin Farrell still hasn’t shown up. Either cancel it for that reason alone or rebrand it, call it Phone Booth, and let’s try this again. And you try harder too, Kellan Lutz!
Suits (USA, 9 p.m.): Just be happy Wendell Pierce is in this episode, because he is carrying the weight of this season on his well-tailored back.
Wahlburgers (A&E, 9:30 p.m): The third season premiere of Wahlburgers is here, and it’s ready to make you ask either “What is Wahlburgers” or “That show has been on for less than 12 never-ending seasons?” Each question is the right question.
Donnie Loves Jenny (A&E, 10 p.m): The return of Wahlburgers now also means the return of Donnie Loves Jenny, because A&E decided long ago that the best way to be in the Wahlberg business—without being HBO—was… this.
Extant (CBS, 10 p.m.): This week’s episode is titled “Empathy For The Devil” instead of “Sympathy For The Devil.” Do you see whatever they just did?
Why? With Hannibal Buress (Comedy Central, 10:30 p.m.): Hannibal Buress still has a TV show!
Twister (CMT, 8:32 p.m.): Pick a poison: Paxton…
Casper (ABC Family, 9 p.m.): …or Pullman?
Sports, sports, all type of sports
Tour de France: Stage 11 (NBC Sports, 8 p.m.)
Pan American Games 2015: From Toronto (ESPN2, 8 p.m.)
Ring Of Honor (Destination America, 8 p.m.)
Lucha Underground (El Rey, 8 p.m.)
Impact Wrestling (Destination America, 9 p.m.)
