Twin Town

Twin Town

Don't be fooled by the "From The Makers Of Trainspotting" tagline at the top of Twin Town's video box. Though Danny Boyle and Andrew MacDonald are listed as executive producers, Twin Town might as well be from anyone attempting a slavish imitation of last year's distinctive hit. Set in Swansea, Wales, the film concerns the exploits of two small-time, drug-dealing, nogoodnik brothers and the assorted lowlifes they encounter. It's like Trainspotting with all the sordidness but none of the charm or substance. About halfway through Twin Town, there's a scene in which a karaoke singer performs "I Will Survive." From behind she's showered by two streams of urine coming from the two main characters. Is the scene funny? Not really, although it's played for laughs. Is it typical of the film? Absolutely. It's packaged and styled like a cutting-edge piece of filmmaking, but Twin Town seldom rises above the level of an especially daring episode of Benny Hill.
