Family films don’t have to be good. They just have to exist, and to be showing within driving distance, and parents will take their kids. Every once in a while, though, the makers of these all-age entertainments take pride in their work and release something that’s more than just a two-hour distraction. On this episode of Film Club, A.A. Dowd and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky catch up with two worthwhile family films released at the tail end of this summer season: Kubo And The Two Strings, the new wonder from stop-motion house Laika; and Pete’s Dragon, an uncommonly soulful remake of a very bad Disney “classic.”
