U.K. TV network celebrates Easter with a chocolate Benedict Cumberbatch
Over the protests of Neil deGrasse Tyson that he thought he was the chocolate Benedict Cumberbatch, the British media company UKTV has created a life-sized milk chocolate avatar of the Sherlock heartthrob. The sculpture was commissioned to celebrate the launch of UKTV’s new, drama-focused network, creatively dubbed Drama.
Chocolatiers sculpted the actor, who we here at The A.V. Club maintain looks like a frog trying to solve a riddle but people worldwide apparently find very sexy, out of 40 kg (88 pounds) of Belgian chocolate. Sculpting the chocolate Cumberbatch reportedly took more than 250 hours; in a video explaining the process, one sculptor said, “The striking thing about Benedict is that he’s got quite a thin face but he’s got a large head…So trying to get that look right is quite tricky.” Thin face, large head, sexy. Got it.
Cumberbatch was chosen for the diabetic-unfriendly honor by a survey of 2,000 British women, who declared him the U.K.’s “dishiest TV drama actor” over the likes of Doctor Who star David Tennant, former Game Of Thrones star and bar-fight veteran Sean Bean, Luther star and hypothetical James Bond Idris Elba, and Homeland’s Damian Lewis. Like the affections of a smitten fan for a person they do not actually know and, in all likelihood, will never meet, let alone get to know in the intimate way that leads to lasting love, the so-called Chocobatch is hollow.
