Ubisoft reportedly in talks to turn one of its games into a Netflix show

We’re a little more than a month away from finding out if Michael Fassbender’s Assassin’s Creed movie will finally be the first halfway decent video game-to-film adaptation. But before we see whether it was capable of clearing that impossibly low bar, Ubisoft, the company behind the film and games, has reportedly marked its next cross-media target: a Netflix original series. According to Reuters, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told reporters the company is in talks with Netflix to produce a show, but he did not mention which of the publisher’s many games were on the table.

This is the latest in a relatively long list of attempts to branch into TV and film for the company. In addition to Assassin’s Creed, Ubisoft is also looking to get started on a film adaptation of The Division, its game about shooting bad guys and collecting hoodies in a plague-ridden New York City. And before all that, there was the aggressively mediocre Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Ubisoft has some TV experience, as well, having produced three seasons of Nickelodeon’s Rabbids Invasion cartoon, based on the dimwitted mutant bunnies of the Raving Rabbids games. Unless Netflix wants to get into big-budget shows starring guys who love sneaking and murder, the animated route seems like a sensible one. Come to think of it, a Grow Home adaptation about the cosmic adventures of a cute uncoordinated robot sounds pretty good right about now.
