Under The Domim Tree
Under the Domim Tree opens with a debate among the adolescent residents of an Israeli children's home in the 1950s, regarding whether to accept or decline reparation money from Germany for the losses of the Holocaust. As intense as the debate is, it's not long before the film discards it and, by portraying various ways past events continue to haunt the children, makes a debate over mere money seem inconsequential. The characters, memorably played by the young cast, range from those who are themselves survivors to those orphaned by the Holocaust, and the film movingly portrays their attempts to create new lives while reclaiming the past. Simply told in a manner that does not shy away from the darkness of its subject matter, Under the Domim Tree is a unique, triumphant film.
