The home video market has been in a slump lately, with DVD sales in decline and consumers slow to convert to Blu-ray. In response, some studios have been looking for ways to target people who are hesitant to buy DVDs because they have some vague plans to buy a Blu-ray player someday. For over a year now, Disney has been selling special edition sets that contain a DVD and a BD in a single case, and now Universal is joining the party with flip-discs that contain DVD on one side, Blu-ray on the other. They'll be launching what they call the "industry-changing dual-format technology" on January 19th of next year, with the release of The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Sounds like a business plan unlikely to move DVD/BD-buyers one way or another, though fundamentally harmless. But what do you think? Will you be more likely to buy The Bourne Trilogy knowing that you can watch it on your DVD player now, and then on your Blu-ray player if you every get around to buying one?
