UPDATE: Game Of Thrones will return to HBO in July

We’re getting down to the wire on HBO’s Game Of Thrones, with only a couple of seasons left for the series. Since time is running out, HBO has apparently decided to squeeze as much out of the show as it can before showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff cruelly rip it away. To that end, the network has decided to make the announcement of the premiere date for the show’s seventh season as exciting as possible, first by releasing a teaser poster last night and then by holding a special Facebook event today.

Continuing the “fire and ice” theme of the teaser poster, the Facebook video is based around the premiere date being frozen in a huge block of ice, and when people in the chat type “fire,” an off-screen flamethrower (or dragon!) does a little burst of flame. Naturally, melting the thing is taking a little while, so some stars from the show have been periodically popping in with little video messages to remind people to type “fire.”

Literally watching ice melt isn’t the most thrilling way to spend your time, but at least we’ll know when Game Of Thrones is coming back by the end of this.

UPDATE: Finally, after over an hour of melting, HBO has revealed that season seven of Game Of Thrones will premiere on July 16, 2017.

You can go back and re-experience the thrill of watching the ice melt below.

UPDATE: HBO has also released a brief teaser that appeared at the end of the Facebook stream. There isn’t really anything new, but it is very dramatic.
