As would-be public servants bicker tonight over who most hates taxes and loves the convenient parts of the American dream, a true leader is preparing to cut through the clutter and address his waiting people. That’s right: House Of Cards’ Smirker In Chief, President Frank Underwood, is expected to address the nation tonight, briefly distracting us from the spectacle of the latest GOP debate with the (relatively more welcome) spectacle of Kevin Spacey’s terrifying Southern drawl slipping from betwixt his barbecue sauce-stained lips.
As announced on Twitter, Underwood’s Netflix-backed missive will presumably address his upcoming re-election bid—or, as it’s known in the real world, the show’s fourth season, which is expected to debut next year. It’s not clear what form the message will take—a new trailer, possibly, or maybe just a video of Kevin Spacey glaring at the camera while he menacingly whispers the date of the new season’s premiere. In any case, it’ll be a nice change of pace to once again hear a politician fancy up his evil scheming with some quasi-Shakespearean language. (It’s possible that Donald Trump’s xenophobic, racist, borderline evil political rhetoric might go down marginally easier if he started couching it in a series of Iago-esque theatrical asides.)

UPDATE: As promised, we’ve got a new teaser for the show, taking the form of a political ad for President Underwood’s re-election campaign. (Or maybe just “election campaign,” since he became the show’s fictitious president without ever going up for the vote.) Besides delighting in the multiple meanings of Underwood’s initials (#FU2016!), the teaser—which aired as an ad spot during the Republican debate—also provided a release date for the show’s next season: March 4 will mark the next chapter in Frank’s ugly, violent struggle to hold on tight to power.
