UPDATE: The feds raid Megaupload; Anonymous strikes back and takes out multiple government and media sites

Amid the debate raging about anti-piracy legislation and its implications for free discourse on the web comes a federal raid on one of the world's most popular file-sharing sites. Megaupload was shut down today by the U.S. government, and four company employees were charged with violating piracy laws. The Megaupload indictment alleges that the company has caused more than a half-billion dollars in lost revenue for copyright holders of illegally downloaded films, TV shows, and other files. UPDATE: Gizmodo reports that the nebulous group of online hackers known as Anonymous has struck against multiple sites in response to the Megaupload raid, including the U.S. Justice Department, U.S. Copyright Office, the RIAA, Universal Music Group, MPAA, and BMI. It has been called the largest coordinated attack in Anonymous' history.
