UPDATED: Joni Mitchell is in a coma—or maybe not

Iconic folk singer Joni Mitchell, who was checked into the hospital late last month after she was discovered unconscious by paramedics at her home, has reportedly fallen into a coma. TMZ, which, like it or not, is often the first to report on such things, says Mitchell is unconscious and completely unresponsive. A close friend of Mitchell’s has reportedly filed legal paperwork to obtain conservatorship over the singer, who has no close family. That’s all there is to say at this time; we’ll update as new information becomes available.

UPDATE: Contradicting TMZ’s report, Joni Mitchell’s official website says she is still in the hospital and conservatorship paperwork has been filed, “but she comprehends, she’s alert, and she has her full senses. A full recovery is expected.” Calling earlier reports “rumors” and the legal filings “a formality,” the site goes on to say ,“As we all know, Joni is a strong-willed woman and is nowhere near giving up the fight. Please continue to keep Joni in your thoughts.”
