UPDATED: Mariah Carey to play Commissioner Gordon, or maybe Gotham’s mayor, in Lego Batman movie
The Lego Batman Movie has been filling out its cast of late, with Rosario Dawson’s Batgirl and Zach Galifianakis’ Joker being two of the most recent actors to lend their voices to the project. And since all of those announcements were well-received, the folks behind the film decided to go ahead and release some news that is more on the “What the ever-living fuck?” end of the casting-news spectrum. Deadline reports Mariah Carey has been cast as the voice of Commissioner James Gordon, which, despite the out-of-left-field sound of it, is not just a sweet, sweet fantasy, baby.
Details on the spinoff of The Lego Movie are already slim, so there’s no explanation for the distaff choice regarding one of Gotham’s most iconic characters. Obviously, the producers could be changing the character to make it a woman, though it’s also possible they simply like the idea of Carey’s voice emanating from the animated face of a mustachioed police commissioner. Honestly, your guess is as good as ours, so let’s just go ahead and take a poll:
Why is Mariah Carey cast as Commissioner Gordon?
UPDATED: It seems Gotham’s criminals may have to accept that the man tasked with hunting them down won’t be able to do a lilting version of “We Belong Together.” No, that ability will be the purview of Gotham’s mayor. Despite early reports claiming Carey would be playing Batman’s trusted friend Jim Gordon in The Lego Batman Movie, it turns out the singer will actually be playing Hizzoner, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That renders our poll above somewhat null and void, but if you still want to partake of what is now merely a thought experiment, simply pretend that you haven’t seen this update, and that Carey really is playing Gordon. From there, your heart will tell you the correct answer.
