UPDATED: Tina Fey is “Sheryl Sandberg on steroids” in Great News’ 2nd season
Cue the “Breaking news” chyron: Great News, NBC’s cable-news comedy created by Tracey Wigfield and executive produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, will have some extra Fey in season two. The 30 Rock star is set to appear in seven episodes of the series, NBC bosses told reporters this morning. The announcement was part of the network’s presentation at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, where Wigfield is scheduled to appear later in the day. If she expands on the executives’ terse description of Fey’s Great News character—“hilarious”—we’ll update this post. As they’d say on The Breakdown With Chuck Pierce, this story is developing.
UPDATE: According to Wigfield, Fey is playing Diana St. Tropez, the new boss at MNN. Described as “Sheryl Sandberg on steroids,” Diana is the author of a book series called Boss Bitch, and “the only woman who’s figured out exactly how to have it all.” That approach will inspire opposite reactions in protagonists Katie (Briga Heelan) and Carol Wendelson (Andrea Martin), with the former aspiring to be Diana and the latter seeing her as everything she isn’t.
