USA adding modern-day Zorro to its lineup of shows about people in nice pants

Taking a rare turn from shows in which people in neatly pressed pants breezily navigate the criminal underworld, USA is prepping a retelling of Zorro set in the sleepy village of present-day Los Angeles, whose wells and livestock have long been imperiled by its lack of a masked Mexican guy whipping a sword around. Simply titled Z, the show from Transporter director Louis Letterier is described as a contemporary origin story that will "chronicle the rise of Diego Moreno from an orphaned teen and raising his sister with little supervision, to an infamous hero fighting to save the city." This not only differentiates it from those other, ongoing attempts to revive Zorro—including Sony's planned reboot of the Antonio Banderas franchise and the post-apocalyptic, Gael Garcia Bernal-starring Zorro Reborn—it will allow USA to update and play with Zorro's established tropes. For example, perhaps instead of carving his mark into things, this new Zorro leaves behind a pair of neatly pressed black pants. "Dios mío! Los pantalones de Zorro!" people will exclaim.
