USA renews Playing House for a second season

USA has renewed Playing House for a second season of parental misadventures with creators/stars/besties Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair. The renewal comes as a pleasant surprise for fans of the charming but low-rated sitcom, which stars Parham and St. Clair as Maggie and Emma, platonic gal-pals raising a baby together. During USA’s nearly six-month silence on House’s fate following its season finale, the show appeared bound for the same one-and-done fate that met Parham and St. Clair’s last sitcom collaboration, NBC’s Best Friends Forever, especially as USA moved to shore up its drama slate. Instead, House will roll out eight new episodes in late 2015.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the renewal was largely based on House’s on-demand numbers, which were enough to offset wobbly live ratings. In keeping with that trend, season two’s episodes will premiere on video-on-demand platforms a week before airing on USA. So characters are still welcome at USA, but some of them, like Maggie and Emma, have to call a week in advance to make sure it’s still cool to stop by.
