The big liberal civil war that Michael Moore planned is coming up tomorrow, so it’s just a matter of hours before he finally takes power and gets this country back on track. It’s important that we all get a lot of rest, though, so we’re going to burn through a bunch of pop culture news stories now before we pledge our eternal allegiance to Comrade Moore and the glorious socialist paradise he’s going to build tomorrow.
- First up we have The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby, who is in talks to join Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in their Fast And Furious spin-off Hobbs And Shaw. Kirby will be playing an MI-5 agent who happens to be—dramatic pause—the sister of Statham’s brutal action dude Deckard Shaw. [via Variety]
- Terence Nance is getting a new late-night comedy show on HBO called Random Acts Of Flyness. It will reportedly have “interconnected vignettes” instead of the usual comedy skits and celebrity interviews, and it will premiere on August 3. [via Vulture]
- Eddie Izzard is set to star alongside Judi Dench in Six Minutes To Midnight, a thriller based on the true story of a man in 1939 who took a job teaching English to the daughters of high-ranking Nazis. He eventually gets accused of murder and goes on the run, so this one takes some turns. [via Deadline]
- The creators of Skins and the BBC’s People Just Do Nothing are teaming up for a comedy about people living in a virtual world. The show, Gary1987, centers on an unemployed dude who jumps into VR in hopes of making money, but “gets in over his head” (possibly because it’s unclear how one makes money off of living in a virtual world). - Former Smash showrunner Josh Safran has sold a new musical romance to Netflix called Mixtape. The series is getting 10 episodes from the streaming service, and it’ll star Jenna Dewan, Callie Hernandez, and Madeline Stowe as people living and loving in Los Angeles. [via Vulture]
- Netflix has ordered a new series called Monarca that will be produced by Salma Hayek’s Ventanarosa Productions. The show will star Irene Azuela and Juan Manuel Bernal, and it centers on the corrupt, scandalous world of “wealthy Mexican elites.” It sounds like Dynasty, but set in Mexico. [via Deadline]
- It looks like the liberal civil war is already gaining some ground, as both Molly Ephraim and Flynn Morrison have decided not to return to Last Man Standing for its Fox revival. Ephraim played the daughter of Tim Allen’s character and Morrison played his grandson, so both roles will now have to be recast. Kaitlyn Dever, who plays another daughter, is still in negotiations.
