Varnaline: Varnaline
Last year, Varnaline released Man Of Sin, a decidedly low-fidelity collection of four-track recordings that were the musical embodiment of gray: moody, stark, introspective and compelling, with more than a hint of static buzz. But since the recording of Man Of Sin, Varnaline has evolved from a one-man side-project for Space Needle's Anders Parker into a full three-piece band that also includes fellow Space Needle leader Jud Ehrbar. The new, expanded line-up accompanies a drastic change in tone and sound: This incarnation of Varnaline opens its album with a slick, appealing, adrenaline-enhanced rock song ("Lights") and meanders through jingle-jangle mid-tempo pop ("Sky'd Out"), thunderous, squealing fuzz-rock ("Velocity"), and a doomy piano dirge ("Really Can't Say"). The album as a whole is more commercially accessible than its predecessor, to be sure, but it's also spottier and more conventional, with fewer revelatory moments. Fans of Parker's past work have come to expect unpredictability, but they may want to step carefully when considering this album.
