Vaughn off Thor
Marvel's new in-house production company is riding high with the success of Iron Man–and if the film's post-credits sequence (as well as reports of an Avengers-heavy release schedule) are any indication, the Marvel Universe is going to become a coherent big-screen milieu of some sort in the coming years. Too bad Matthew Vaughn won't be part of it: The Layer Cake and Stardust director was officially attached to Marvel Studios' upcoming Thor last August, but Vaughn's holding deal expired in December–and now the studio will be looking for a new director as soon as screenwriter Mark Protosevich finishes the script, which is said to be "a period fantasy in the vein of The Lord Of The Rings series" (although surely that'll just be the origin portion of the movie?). Vaughn was briefly attached to X-Men 3 between the time Bryan Singer left and Brett Ratner joined; he's also been in talks to adapt another comic, Mark Millar's and John Romita, Jr.'s Kick-Ass.
