Veep’s Armando Iannucci to adapt graphic novel about Stalin
Armando Iannucci, the sweary mind who brought us The Thick Of It, In The Loop, and Veep, announced in March that he was taking his gift for curse words and political satire to the Soviet Union. At the time, he said only that it was “sort of a comedy about the death of Stalin.” Now, a few more details have been announced: He’s set to write and direct an adaption of Fabien Nury’s graphic novel The Death Of Stalin, which begins in March of 1953. (Stalin died on March 5 of that year.) The original French graphic novel (La Morte De Stálin), written by Nury and drawn by Robin Thierry, was released in 2010. It comprises two volumes, the second of which deals with Stalin’s funeral and the political aftermath of his death. Although his experience with political satire has so far been limited to the U.K. and U.S., Iannucci has plenty of experience writing for brutal, abusive authoritarian figures.
