Verve Records gets smaller

Universal Music is downsizing Verve Records, a jazz label that has released albums by artists from Duke Ellington to Nina Simone (and even handled a few Velvet Underground and Mothers Of Invention records) in its 50-year-history. Variety says a dozen of the label's employees will be laid off. It already functions as Verve Music Group, whose releases include various movie soundtracks and blander contemporary jazz for sure, but it's kept on—and reissued—a lot of solid jazz releases. The story says the label will continue to sign new artists.
