Villains unite against dueling heroes in this Civil War II: Kingpin exclusive

As the Marvel Universe becomes increasingly absorbed into Civil War II, the shockwaves of the event are reaching more and more characters. While the heroes are split on what to do about an Inhuman that can predict future crimes, villains are feeling the most pressure from this new development, finding themselves as targets for wrongdoings they have yet to commit. Wilson “The Kingpin” Fisk isn’t just any villain, though, and he’s finding a way to profit from the new status quo in Civil War II: Kingpin, a four-issue miniseries that has Fisk exploring the opportunities of a superhero schism.

Featuring a creative team of up-and-coming talent, including writer Matthew Rosenberg, artist Ricardo Lopez Ortiz, and colorist Mat Lopes, this miniseries has the potential to find some narrative value in the generally disappointing Civil War II event. This preview of next week’s Civil War II: Kingpin #1 sets a bleak, gritty tone that works very well for this cast of street-level villains, and Rosenberg’s script accentuates the dire circumstances these characters are facing.

Each panel on the first page tells its own little story, and Ortiz and Lopes do a great job making each image evoke a specific emotion. The tension builds until the last page reveal of Fisk standing before a table of eight other rogues, a celebratory visual that serves as a stark contrast to what precedes it. This creative team’s past work has shown that it has a bold, engaging approach to making comics, and that talent makes Civil War II: Kingpin a title well worth checking out.
