Vinnie Jones joins Arrow as the villainous Brick
The producers of Arrow have announced that British football player turned actor Vinnie Jones is joining the show’s third season as the supervillain Brick. Jones—best known for playing large, slab-like heavies in films like Snatch and Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels—was presumably chosen to play the large, slab-like Brick by a casting agent working five minutes ahead of a deadline.
In the comics, Brick (real name Daniel Brickwell) is described as a criminal mastermind who uses his invulnerability as leverage in his war against both superhero archer Oliver Queen and more traditional criminal elements. It’s not clear how much of that malevolent genius stuff will make it into Jones’ three-episode performance, but he will probably headbutt a bunch of dudes, which takes a certain kind of peculiar genius in its own right.
Arrow will be Jones’ second gig as a supervillain, after his appearance as Juggernaut in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. Sadly, there don’t seem to be any Brick-themed Internet memes for Jones to randomly reference this time, but maybe he can invent some of his own. (“I’m Brick, chaps, hadn’t you heard?” has a nice ring to it, for instance.)
