Viola Davis to star in Steve McQueen’s female-led heist thriller

Taking part in a big heist is a risky endeavor, especially if you’re not working with a guy like George Clooney who has figured out every possible twist and turn ahead of time. According to Variety, Steve McQueen’s next project is going to be about a heist that goes wrong, and unlike all of those Ocean’s 11 movies, this heist ends with everybody getting killed. Thankfully, that’s just the beginning, as the movie itself is about the widows of the original heist crew getting together to finish the job.

Appropriately titled Widows, the movie is based on a British miniseries from the ’80s and it’s being written by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn. Variety also says that How To Get Away With Murder star Viola Davis will play one of the titular widows, though the rest of the crew apparently hasn’t been cast yet. This all suggests a bit more prestige than the usual heist thriller, especially considering that McQueen’s last film was the Best Picture-winning 12 Years A Slave. Plus, it should give Ocean’s Eight a run for its money.
