Danny McBride’s new HBO series can’t get here soon enough, and while it’s easily my most anticipated new show of 2019, I was admittedly a teensy bit concerned by the complete lack of Walton Goggins’ name in various news items about The Righteous Gemstones. Goggins and McBride had sublime chemistry in Vice Principals, so it seemed like a crazy missed opportunity to not rekindle that magic. Fear not, fellow Goggins-heads, for Deadline brings the good word that Walton Goggins will have a recurring role on McBride’s new comedy, set in the world of televangelism. And lo, from the heavens (or Instagram) came a divine photo of Goggins’ character:

His name is Baby Billy, and he’s “a former child star who clogged and sang for Jesus. As an aging man, he’s fallen on hard times and comes to the Gemstones for salvation.” CLOGGED. HE CLOGGED FOR JESUS. Is this peak Walton Goggins? Is he achieving his final form as a character actor? Whatever it is, it’s perfect.

Goggins will have a recurring guest role on the series, which follows “the world famous Gemstone televangelist family, which has a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work, all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” In addition to McBride, who also serves as writer and executive producer, The Righteous Gemstones stars John Goodman, Adam DeVine, Tony Cavalero, and Cassidy Freeman. HBO has yet to set a release date for the series, but it’s expected to premiere sometime this year–probably after they finally get all those dragons out of the way.
