Nearly six years after it was first acquired by Tobey Maguire’s production company (presumably in a poker game), the live-action adaptation of the 1980s anime Robotech appears to be back on, addressing that potential month-long void where movie theaters would not have big-ass battlin’ robots and be forced to fill it with boring humans talking. Warner Bros. has reportedly chosen commercials director Nic Mathieu—a proven fan of CGI and shiny metal things—and brought him aboard a project that, like the original Japanese series (which mashed together three unrelated shows) and its titular technology, has been assembled piecemeal out of various, far-flung writers and producers such as Akiva Goldsman, Lawrence Kasdan, Alfred Gough, and Miles Millar. Provided they can get it together this time, they’ll form a giant, slick machine that will be piloted to fend off the many invaders of its territory, like Transformers, that Voltron movie, and especially Pacific Rim, which is basically the exact same story. Though really, aren’t all movies really about big-ass battlin’ robots, when you get down to it?
