Watch a BBC documentary on the upbeat, unbeatable sound of Northern Soul
As reported by Boing Boing, BBC Two’s The Culture Show just aired an episode devoted to Northern Soul—the subgenre of rare American soul music lifted out of obscurity by underground British DJs in the ’70s and beyond. Like a Northern Soul anthem itself, the documentary packs a lot of punch into a lean timeframe: Just half an hour long, it presents the entire history of the movement as well as its sociopolitical context, its enduring legacy, and, of course, lots of vintage dancefloor footage and upbeat Northern soul tunes. When you’re done watching, brush up on some of the basics of the sound via The A.V. Club’s Gateways To Geekery on Northern Soul from 2010.
