Watch Abbi and Ilana from Broad City interview Sleater-Kinney
It’s possible that 2015 has hit its peak already. Last Friday, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, co-creators and stars of Broad City, interviewed Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker, Carrie Brownstein, and Janet Weiss as part of the lead-up to the release of the group’s new album, No Cities To Love in an event hosted by NPR. The result is now, thankfully, available to watch.
The A.V. Club attended the interview at New York’s Ace Hotel which, with only about 150 people present, allowed for a certain level of intimacy between both the audience and the people at the center of cultural phenomena that have, in different ways, become symbols for young people and women. Jacobson and Glazer may have been the ones asking the questions, but they were just as much the focus of attention as the five discussed everything from Jacobson’s embarrassment at her past love of jam band fans, Weiss’ raiding of Brownstein’s HBO Go account, and everyone’s deep, abiding love of Patti Smith.
The conversation hit many expected notes, focusing on the difficulties both Broad City and Sleater-Kinney have faced, both as women (something everyone expressed frustration with having to discuss) and as groups repeatedly boxed into being identified solely as women. But the clear mutual admiration on display felt special, and bled into discussions about the ethics of making art, the business end of things, and the similarities between making television and a record. Even Broad City executive producer Amy Poehler got into the action from afar, texting a few questions for Sleater-Kinney. No men asked anything.
