Watch Beach House flex its sterling discography in new concert film

Beach House have been so good, so consistently, for so long, that it can be easy to take for granted. The duo’s sound has glacially evolved, moving so gently from the programmed drums of 2006’s Beach House to the room-filling sound of last year’s 7 (our favorite album of 2018) that you might not realize just how much Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally’s outfit has grown over time.

In celebration of their impressive career—and in promotion of some new tour dates—Pitchfork has released an hour-and-a-half-long concert film from the band, Beach House Live At Kings Theatre, which you can see in its entirety above. Like all Beach House, it’s simultaneously sad and uplifting, radiating moods that, in no small part, are dependent on the lens of the listener. The setlist spans 2008’s Devotion to the aforementioned 7, offering a comprehensive encapsulation of the Baltimore band’s catalog while demonstrating why its new material deserves equal billing alongside the old. (The nit-picky among us might have hoped for a few more cuts from high-water mark Teen Dream.)

Production is paramount here, and both the sound and cinematography on display faithfully capture the enveloping sensation of attending a Beach House concert in person. It’s a worthy summation of a long career, and a reminder Legrand and Scally aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
