Watch Billy Crystal voice a primitive Buzz Lightyear in this unsettling Toy Story demo
Pixar originally wanted Billy Crystal to voice Buzz Lightyear in its first feature, 1995’s Toy Story (Crystal turned it down and the part went to Tim Allen). The animation studio went so far as to put some When Harry Met Sally dialogue into a piece of custom-made animation, tailored to Crystal’s character freaking out about a wagon-wheel coffee table.
Maybe it’s just because the pompous Buzz is so firmly connected with Allen’s voice 17 years and three films later, but this clip feels very wrong. It’s not befitting of a space ranger to get so worked up about a coffee table.
