In addition to being an expert tattoo rater and horny tweet reader, Jeff Goldblum is also recognized for his decade-spanning career as an actor. From brief appearances in films like Annie Hall to starring roles in the Jurassic Park franchise, Goldblum has been lucky enough to work with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. In a recent video for Vanity Fair, the actor discussed a number of films from his lengthy résumé and heaped praise on nearly every director he’s ever worked with.

“David Cronenberg is a very smart guy and the script was smart and beautifully written,” Goldblum said of the 1986 film The Fly, a movie that he was particularly passionate about. Admitting that he was never a “careerist” when it came to choosing roles, Goldblum said the script represented a “landmark” for him and a “learning experience.” That seems to be the way the 65-year-old actor thinks about all his roles. They’re all chances to learn, grow as a performer, and, perhaps most importantly, work with people he’s excited about.

He goes on to discuss his first meeting with another director he loved— Steven Spielberg, who he actually had to convince to keep the character of Dr. Ian Malcolm in the final script for Jurassic Park. Some years later, Goldblum took a general meeting with “genius” and “connoisseur” Wes Anderson, who would go on to direct him in three films, including some over-the-phone voiceover direction for Isle Of Dogs. It’s clear from the way Jeff Goldblum talks about this stuff that his relationship with a director is very important, which explains why, over the course of his career, he’s worked with so many great ones.
