Watch original SNL cast member Laraine Newman play Lena Dunham in Girls: Season 38
Laraine Newman was the Phil Hartman of SNL's original cast—a crackerjack supporting player who didn't create many breakout characters, but put her all into every scene she was in. After leaving the show in 1980, Newman's done supporting work on TV and film, and has spent recent years doing voicework from everything from The Fairly OddParents to Metalocalypse. Her comedy instincts are still as sharp as ever, as evidenced by this clip, a spoof of Girls in which she plays Lena Dunham's character 35 years older and no closer to having it all figured out. Newman really nails Dunham's rhythms, even as her problems change from not being able to afford her own apartment to not being able to afford an assistant living facility.
