Stephen Colbert has never kept his Catholicism a secret. He’s a vocal Sunday School teacher, biblical scholar, and friend of Jesus—albeit one with a few understandable reservations about modern religion. He had regular church-friendly guests on The Colbert Report and kept ample tabs on both popes that served during his show’s reign. Still, Colbert’s video hangout with friend and spiritual advisor Father James Martin for the National Catholic Review’s America Magazine is fascinating to watch, if only to really see the future Late Show host drop some serious saint-based science. The six-minute clip is fairly casual, with the pair just palling around in America’s rather sparse New York offices. Still, Colbert is as charming, smart, and animated as ever, especially with his new beard in tow.
