Watch the Inherent Vice trailer with the worst possible soundtrack

A script based on a novel by a notoriously reclusive, cultishly beloved author. A highly respected director with a loyal following of his own returning to the funky 1970s milieu that helped build his reputation. A cast list brimming with past Oscar winners and nominees alongside other well-known and well-liked performers. These are among the factors which might make people want to see Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, a film based on the Thomas Pynchon novel of the same name, when it opens on December 12. But what might make these same people stay far away from theaters that day and possibly even make up pathetic excuses about having “something super important to do” in order to avoid seeing the film? Try a remixed trailer from Funny Or Die that adds music by Third Eye Blind, Katy Perry, Psy, Carly Rae Jepsen, and other artists whose music is likely to cause allergic reactions in the target demographic for Inherent Vice. Bluntly titled “Inherent Vice Trailer—With Terrible Music,” the brief clip is instructive in the way it shows how a few simple musical substitutions can make even one of 2014’s most anticipated films look like an unimaginative straight-to-video hack job. Perhaps the only the thing missing here is the sound of a needle scratching a vinyl record.
