We could explain this video—but where’s the fun in that?

YouTube has to one of the most authentically and democratically weird places on the Internet. Sure, it’s dominated by music videos, how-tos, let’s plays, and pop science explainers, but its status as the world’s de facto video sharing platform means that’s it’s also full of bona fide oddities and mysteries.

Which brings us to our Friday afternoon treat—the first video that this writer ever favorited. It was uploaded in 2010, but shot way before that, which makes it look unintentionally like a found-footage sci-fi movie. We could translate and explain it to you, but it’s the kind of thing that’s best experienced with an open imagination.

Just open yourself up to the post-Cold War drabness, the bizarre Soviet computers, the DIY technology, the unchecked geekery, and the fact this guy is such a character, and accept it as a window into an alternate world that you have been privileged to glimpse.
