Earlier this week, we reported that two producers from religious production company Pure Flix had shown up in Thailand at the site of the Tham Luang cave rescue to pick over the harrowing details of the story like vultures in hopes of finding a delicious morsel they can turn into a faith-based movie about how the trapped kids were rescued by the power of prayer (and also probably by a white person like Kevin Sorbo). Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu doesn’t want to let that happen, though, saying on Twitter this week that he refuses “to let Hollywood #whitewashout the Thai cave rescue story.”
He adds that this story is “too important” to let other people—meaning white people in Hollywood—decide “who the real heroes are,” so he’s now working with Ivanhoe Pictures to develop a separate cave rescue movie. That’s according to Variety, which says that the production company is in talks with high-level officials in Thailand and that “multiple studios have show interest” in picking up this particular cave movie.
